Metallographic Preparation of HardMetal (Tungsten Carbide) Successfully Performed at ZAG

The Laboratory for Metals, Corrosion and Anti-Corrosion Protection at the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG) successfully completed the metallographic preparation of a HardMetal (tungsten carbide) sample, a material characterised by exceptional hardness and highly demanding preparation requirements.
This achievement was made possible through the expert support of Peter Egelič and Milan Jereb from DECCA d.o.o., who provided an in-depth demonstration of advanced AKASEL preparation materials specifically designed for very hard materials. Their technical expertise was essential for obtaining a high-quality metallographic surface suitable for detailed microstructural analysis.
The full preparation process—including sample mounting, grinding, polishing, and metallographic examination—was carried out by Nal Trobec, a highly capable student whose precision and technical competence were crucial for the successful outcome.
This accomplishment underscores the value of strong collaboration between research institutions, industry partners, and emerging researchers—an approach that is fully aligned with the core principles promoted within the MESCEL project.
