Guest Lecture on Corrosion by ZAG Researcher for Master’s and PhD Students at the University of Ljubljana

On 28 October 2025, Dr Mirjam Bajt Leban from the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute (ZAG), and coordinator of the Horizon Europe project MESCEL, delivered an invited lecture on corrosion to Master’s (2nd year) and PhD students of Metallurgy and Materials at the Department of Materials and Metallurgy, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering, University of Ljubljana.
The lecture was organized at the invitation of Prof. Dr Jožef Medved as part of the elective course Corrosion. Covering five interconnected thematic areas, the lecture provided students with a comprehensive insight into both fundamental and applied aspects of corrosion science:
Methods for corrosion monitoring and investigation
Corrosion of titanium alloys, with emphasis on degradation of medical implants
Corrosion of brass in contact with drinking water
Hydrogen embrittlement and its effects on metallic materials
Can corrosion be useful? – An example within the MESCEL project on the recycling of hardmetals
In the concluding part, Dr Bajt Leban presented how advanced electrochemical methods are being applied within the MESCEL project to enable sustainable recycling of hardmetal materials, offering a promising pathway towards circularity in the materials industry.
The MESCEL team is proud to contribute to knowledge dissemination, sustainability, and innovation in the field of materials science, and remains committed to supporting the education and professional development of future metallurgists and materials engineers.
